Supporting Widows and Orphans in Njewa!
Buying a VintageRemade handbag is not only eco-friendly but will also help (little by little!) transform a community in rural Africa! For every bag sold, five dollars goes to provide food, housing and education for orphans and widows in the village of Njewa in Malawi through Women for Orphans and Widows (WOW). Five dollars might not seem like a lot, but that can actually supply 10 meals for one child.
I'm really excited about this! In the summer of ’06, I visited Njewa (pronounced In-jay-wah) and got to experience the beauty of the African culture and see the needs firsthand. The whole idea of VintageRemade is taking things that are used/discarded/forgotten and creating something new and beautiful. I feel like this opportunity to support WOW is doing that in a different way only it's with people and their futures and that’s REALLY cool. Cool to be part of something bigger than our small, little lives. Mhm…yes.
And WOW is an amazing program! Women who would otherwise be resource-less, learn how to sew, farm, raise livestock, make soap, jewelry, etc.. With new skills and a sustainable enterprise, they can then be financially independent and provide for their family AND kids are fed!
